A button is a disc that either holds a garment shut or pretends to. Buyers who start with “gold, four-hole, 18 lignes” skip the only split that matters: what the disc is made of. Material decides wash temperature, metal detection, nickel, and whether the face can take a laser logo.

Four material families
Natural — horn, wood, coconut, corozo (tagua), mother-of-pearl and other shells. They read as “real” on tailoring, linen and craft-led lines. They also move with humidity, take dye unevenly, and can crack if the sewing foot is brutal. Horn and shell remain the language of coats and shirts that want a natural face.
Resin and plastic — urea and polyester thermosets (the classic fashion button), plus injected thermoplastics. Volume apparel lives here: colour-matched, laserable, relatively cheap. Resin is not “eco” by default; rPET and bio-based stories are extra SKUs.
Metal — brass, zinc alloy (Zamak), steel, aluminium, stainless. Sew-on fashion buttons, jeans tack buttons and some shank styles. Durable, plateable, and a REACH nickel conversation whenever they touch skin.
Ceramic, glass and stone — zirconia and porcelain sew-ons, glass pearl, marble-look stone. Hard, cold, often combined with a metal back. Shirt programmes that want a mineral face use them; drop them on a tile floor and the story changes.
Shape and job
Flat sew-through (two- and four-hole) is the shirt and blouse default. Shank buttons sit off the cloth for coats. Novelty shapes are decoration first. Detachable and covered buttons are construction types, not materials.
History is decorative: China has archaeological sew-throughs millennia old; Europe popularised the buttonhole as a working closure in the later Middle Ages. None of that belongs on a PO.
How to brief a mill
- Material family (not “nice”).
- Ligne size and hole or shank geometry.
- Face: colour, laser, print, plate.
- Wash, dry-clean, metal detection, kids small-parts.

Resin matching a seasonal colour is a dyeing and polishing problem. Metal matching a zipper pull is a plating problem. Mixing the two on one placket without a standard illuminant is how “the same gold” becomes two golds.
Ligne sizing is the other early decision. Shirt programmes live in small lignes; coats jump. A 14-ligne zirconia and a 32-ligne urea shank are not interchangeable on a marker. Hole geometry (two-hole versus four-hole versus shank) belongs in the same sentence as material: a ceramic four-hole on a thick coating wants a different sewing foot from a horn shank.
Function splits — working, decorative, detachable — only matter after the substrate is named. A decorative metal on a cuff still takes nickel and wash tests if it can touch skin or a light fabric.
