A care label is the durable instruction sewn (or sometimes heat-applied) into the garment. It is not the swing ticket. Exporters who print beautiful ISO symbols on cardboard and skip the sewn tape fail the first lab or the first customs exam.

ISO 3758: five symbols, one order
The international symbol language is ISO 3758. The sequence is always:
wash → bleach → dry → iron → professional textile care
A washtub, a triangle, a square, an iron, a circle. Dots mean temperature, bars mean gentler, a cross means do not. The symbol states the most severe treatment the article can still take, not a marketing suggestion.
China’s GB/T 8685 tracks this system closely, with Chinese-language duties on top. The US still allows ASTM D5489 symbols and/or words under the FTC Care Labeling Rule — English, permanent, at least one safe cleaning method for the useful life of the garment.

What “permanent” means
Paper hangtags are not permanent. Most regulated markets want fibre (and often care) to remain legible for the life of the product. Woven tape, printed satin, some heat-seal films — specified to survive the care you claim.
Do not reverse symbol order. Do not invent a sixth symbol. Do not put “dry clean only” on a garment that will be wet-processed in the laundry and then fail the first home wash.

Process that does not fail at ex-factory
- Name destination markets.
- Test fibre on the actual bulk (not the mill’s verbal).
- Legal review of symbol order, language, fibre format.
- Confirm sew-in or heat-seal with the factory — including placement that will not sit on a brand heat press.
- Final audit: tape present, correct SKU, not a leftover from last colourway.
EU digital-product-passport talk will add QR duties over time. That is extra data, not a licence to skip the sewn tape.
Do not mix ASTM D5489 artwork with ISO 3758 order on the same tape “to cover both markets” without a review — the symbol sets are cousins, not twins. A heat-seal care film that peels at wash 3 is not permanent, however correct the icons were.
