Matching lining to shell: shrinkage, static and care

Lining and shell do not need identical shrinkage. They need compatibility. If the lining shrinks more, it pulls the shell into puckers. If the lining shrinks less (or grows) while the shell shrinks, the lining drops and bags. Pattern-makers call the first “tight lining” and the second “lining kick.” Both look like sewing. Both are often a mill ticket.

A 2% mismatch is a common working cap. Viscose at 2–4% wash shrinkage next to polyester shell at <1% is a hem that will not stay level.

Shrinkage bands

Aim for lining shrinkage slightly less than or equal to the shell, with a difference inside about 2% unless the pattern is built for more (full coats with walking vents tolerate a bit of drop; a fitted dress does not).

Plain woven lining product language often wants wash change about −3.0% to +1.0% (FZ/T 43004-type or customer specs). Outside that, the lining fails even before matching.

Methods: wash GB/T 8628 / 8629 / 8630 (ISO 6330 / 5077), AATCC 135; tumble dry if the care label tumbles. Dry-clean GB/T 19981 / ISO 3175. Steam GB/T 17031 — important on synthetics. Knits add relaxation. Formula: (after − before) / before × 100%; negative is shrink.

Fusing a lining to a canvas (some jacket hems, some waistcoats) adds a heat shrink. Test after the fuse if that is the process.

Pre-shrink is useful and not magic. Viscose still moves with moisture after a sloppy pre-shrink. Verify on bulk.

Other pairing rules

  1. Drape. Lining lighter and softer than the shell. Nylon and viscose drape; stiff polyester taffeta can fight a fluid dress.
  2. Static. Hydrophobic linings cling. Anti-stat finish or a cellulose fibre if the brief is a dry winter office.
  3. Mass and thickness below the shell (pile and fur excepted).
  4. Care. Polyester and nylon linings often <1% shrink; regenerated cellulose 2–4%. Do not pair a high-shrink lining with a washable shell unless you pre-shrink and leave ease. Dry-clean acetate with dry-clean wool is a coherent pair.
  5. Shade. Harmonise; do not go darker than the shell if crock can stain the face. Fastness still required.
  6. Abrasion. Polyester and nylon win at cuffs and bagging seats.
  7. Slide. The sleeve must go on.
  8. Seam slippage / ravelling. Acetate and polyester often sew clean; nylon and viscose can run — density and seam choice matter.

Export and kids

File shrinkage, fastness, formaldehyde, azo. Kids’ linings pick up GB 31701 and GB 18401 (infant formaldehyde ≤20 mg/kg, direct skin ≤75 in the GB 18401 A/B language), banned amines, phthalates where plastic prints sit on the same garment. Complaints: kick hems, crock, ravelling, cords on kids (EN 14682 / ASTM F1816) — the last is a garment design issue that lining programs still inherit.

Write shell fibre + lining fibre, both shrink methods, max difference, shade rule, anti-stat, care. Matching is a table of two columns. One column is not a match.
