Nylon versus polypropylene webbing

Nylon webbing and polypropylene webbing are both “synthetic tape.” They are not the same SKU. Polyamide (nylon 6 / 66) is the high-tenacity, dyeable, abrasion-resistant strap. Polypropylene (PP) is the light, hydrophobic, cheaper strap. Mixing them on a colour card is how a bag factory discovers, in the rain, that one shoulder sinks and the other floats.

Cut a nylon tape and you may see a paler core — it was typically woven greige and piece-dyed. Yarn-dyed PP stays the same colour through the section.

What the fibres actually do

Nylon webbing is strong, abrasion-resistant and relatively soft on skin. It takes dye well, so fashion colours and brand matches are realistic. It stays flexible in the cold. Density is around 1.14 g/cm³. It absorbs some moisture (up to about 9% in extreme saturation); wet tensile can drop on the order of 10–15%. Untreated nylon also loses strength in long UV exposure — figures around 50% after a year of sun are cited on industrial programs. Melting point is high enough for apparel finishing, but a hot knife still cuts it.

Polypropylene webbing is lighter (density about 0.90 g/cm³), does not absorb water, and floats. It is stiffer in the hand. Colour is usually limited to yarn-dyed lots; piece-dyeing PP is not the nylon story. It costs less — mill talk of 40–60% under nylon is common on comparable widths. Abrasion is poorer. Cold stiffens it. Melting point is around 160 °C, so heat-cut edges are easy and ironing is a risk. Chemical resistance to many acids and alkalis is a PP selling point; nylon is weaker in acid.

A mill shortcut: nylon tape is often woven then dyed (a cut end can flash white); PP is dyed then woven. Combustion and a tensile strip still beat folklore when the invoice just says “nylon-look.”

Numbers buyers actually use

Industrial catalogues quote one-inch (25 mm) tapes in pounds-force. Treat the following as order-of-magnitude, not a garment PO:

Apparel and fashion bags almost never need MIL-W-4088 Type VIII numbers. They still need a stated width, thickness and a tensile method if the tape is a strap. ASTM D6770-type tension tests appear on commercial PP. A certificate of analysis and a lot defect rate belong on a program, not a one-off sample.

Safety factors are a bag-engineering conversation (water rescue vs. a tote vs. a fall-arrest harness). Do not copy a 10:1 tactical factor onto a dress belt.

How to choose

  • Load, abrasion, cold, colour match, a soft shoulder: nylon.
  • Light tote, promo bag, wet use, mould risk, a tight cost: PP.
  • Marine and chemical splash: PP unless a coated nylon is specified.
  • Dye-to-match a seasonal fashion colour: nylon, with a crock and wash.
  • Heat-cut edge on a cheap binding: PP is native; nylon also cuts, but the fibre is still nylon.

Polyester webbing sits in the middle of many apparel programs (UV and dimensional stability, dyeable, less “nylon hand”). If the brief is a fashion garment tape, ask whether the mill meant polyester before you fight about nylon versus PP.

Spec line

Write polyamide 6 or 66 vs polypropylene vs polyester, denier or gsm, weave, width, yarn-dyed or piece-dyed, UV package if any, and a breaking load with method. “Black nylon webbing” that arrives as PP is a fibre substitution. Weigh a metre, burn a yarn, or read the invoice — then write the polymer so it does not happen twice.
