The earlier University note on smart labels is the retail ticket. This one is the chip that stays in the garment — or dies in the washer if you chose a hangtag inlay. RFID and NFC are not interchangeable radios, and a laundry tag is not a swing ticket.
Sew-in identity is still an accessory. TrimGem University teaches garment-resident chips next to care tapes because a one-stop Guangzhou desk samples both. The catalogue will keep adding inlay packages; wash life is still a construction choice.

Radios
UHF (EPC Gen2) is bulk read: receiving tunnels, store cycle count, some EAS gates. European programmes often sit around 865–868 MHz; other regions use their UHF allocations. Read distance is metres in a tuned portal, not in a foil-lined carton.
HF / NFC (13.56 MHz) is centimetres. NFC is the phone tap (ISO/IEC 14443). A related HF family (ISO/IEC 15693) appears in some closed systems. Cost per inlay is higher than high-volume UHF; the job is authenticity, storytelling, resale, warranty bind.
Most retailers run UHF for logistics and add NFC only on a premium or anti-counterfeit line. Dual-frequency inlays exist when one physical label must do both.
Constructions that survive laundry
- Heat-seal textile RFID — pressed onto workwear / PPE at a defined temperature and time; specified for industrial wash.
- Sew-in woven or silicone laundry tag — best wash life; silicone packs are quoted for many tens of industrial cycles.
- Care-label sandwich — inlay between tapes; watch thickness and iron icons.
- Hangtag — removed at POS; cheapest; not a laundry product.
Metal snaps, foil prints and metallised yarn next to the antenna detune reads. Placement is an RF problem, not only a sewing problem.
Why brands bother
Inventory accuracy, fewer outs, faster counts, combined RFID-EAS. Published case studies (Inditex UHF programmes, Uniqlo, Decathlon) describe systems, including readers and process. A 2,000-piece fashion test without a reader plan is a bag of chips.
Pick four fields: garment type, wash route, read environment (store, DC, laundry), unit budget. Then pick frequency and package.
A fashion cotton tee that is never industrial-washed can live with a UHF hangtag pulled at POS. A hotel sheet cannot. A luxury leather bag may want NFC in a sewn leather patch because the customer will tap it, and UHF in the same patch may detune against the metal hardware. Those three programmes are three BOMs.
Encoding discipline matters as much as the plastic. Unique serials support authenticity and resale; SKU-only encoding supports count but not item-level trace. If the brand later wants a digital product passport, the identity on the chip has to have been unique from the start. Retrofitting uniqueness onto a SKU-only ticket is a new production.
