A garment is a shell plus everything else that makes the shell wearable. Garment trims (accessories, findings, notions — mills use all three) are those parts: lace, buttons, hardware, zippers, cords, labels, thread, interlinings, linings, fills and the rest of the pack. They are not the outer fabric. Treating them as an afterthought is how a well-cut jacket fails on nickel release, a split chain or a missing care symbol.
TrimGem is building a one-stop accessory platform from Guangzhou. The live catalogue started with lace, appliques, sew-on buttons, scarf and pin hardware, beads and cords. The university already covers the families we add next, so a brief written here still matches how we sample and how we grow the line.

Three jobs, not one SKU
- Join and fasten — sew-on buttons, press snaps, zippers, hooks, drawcords, hook-and-loop.
- Support and protect — linings, interlinings, padding, sewing thread.
- Identify and decorate — woven labels, hangtags, lace, embroidery, transfers, metal logos.
Cost share is small next to fabric. Failure is not. A zipper that splits, a snap that pulls through a knit, or a hangtag that omits fibre content can reject the shipment.
What belongs on the BOM
Name article, material, size, finish, test and attachment. “Trims TBD” leaves the factory to invent the product.
| Family | Typical articles |
|---|---|
| Closures | sew-on, snap, jeans button, zipper, trouser hook |
| Narrow fabrics | lace, webbing, elastic, drawcord, tape |
| Identity | woven label, care tape, hangtag, RFID |
| Structure | lining, fusible interlining, wadding |
| Surface | heat-transfer, badge, reflective tape |
Waterproof-breathable membranes (PU, TPU, PTFE) are laminated rather than sewn on as a disc. Call them functional accessory materials so the right mill quotes.
Orders are mixed and small. That is why a Guangzhou cluster matters: change a shank, a plate, a scallop or a zipper gauge without restarting a fabric mill.
Write the pack as risk families if it helps the lab: fasteners (pull-off, nickel), textiles (azo, wash), identity (legal text), kidswear (small parts and cords). TrimGem’s sampling habit is to treat the trim pack as its own tech pack — including lines that are still moving from university notes onto the catalogue.
