Woven versus nonwoven interlining

Factories still call nonwoven fusible “paper canvas.” That nickname is the hint: no yarn, no grain, cut any way, cheap, stiff when you want stiff. Woven (and knitted) interlinings have grain. They move with the shell. They cost more. They are the reason a wool front still hangs after five dry-cleans.

A full front in nonwoven can look clean on a hanger and boardy on a body. After wash the web can crack; the shell then shows a dead crease or a bubble.

Structure

Woven / knitted: yarns, warp and weft (or courses and wales). Strength follows grain. You cut them like cloth. Knits add engineered stretch.

Nonwoven: staple or filament web, bonded with heat, chemistry or water-jet. Properties are closer to isotropic. Cutting waste drops because there is no grain to honour. Polyester, polyamide and viscose webs are typical. Light, breathable, low price. Lower tear, poorer wash durability, more heat shrinkage than a good woven.

Wovens (cotton, poly/cotton, synthetics) are denser, stronger, more wash- and heat-stable, better at holding a press. They are also heavier and less airy.

When woven (or knit) is the article

Large areas that must drape: jacket fronts, coat facings, silk dresses, fine wool trousers. The interlining should follow the shell’s stretch. A knit fusible on jersey; a bias-cut woven on a shaped facing; a stable woven on a stable wool.

Repeated wash and dry-clean: yarn structures survive as a cloth. A poor nonwoven can split internally; the face then blisters.

High-value shells: do not save cents on a front canvas that telegraphs.

When nonwoven is the article

Small, stiff zones: shirt collars and cuffs, waistbands, pocket flaps, plackets, belt loops. Cost matters. Grain would only waste cloth. The hand is allowed to be crisp.

Do not read “nonwoven = low quality.” A 20 g/m² fine web on a chiffon facing can be the correct, invisible choice. A 80 g/m² board on a coat front is the incorrect, visible one.

Three factory errors

  1. Nonwoven on a whole coat or dress front. Hangs. Walks like cardboard. Washes into cracks and bubbles.
  2. Stable canvas on stretch shell. Arm lifts, shell grows, interlining does not, seam or fuse pops.
  3. Interlining shrinks more than the shell. Fine wool and silk show orange-peel at the press, or bubbles after laundry. Always trial shrink.

You can mix in one garment: nonwoven in the collar stand, woven in the front, stay tape on the pocket. That is normal. What is not normal is one gsm of nonwoven “because it fuses.”

Spec line

Write woven, knitted or nonwoven, fibre, gsm, adhesive, zone. Cut a trial. Match stretch and shrinkage. Natural-fibre wovens exist if the brief wants cotton canvas rather than a polyester web. Ecology is a fibre choice; it is not automatically “woven = green.”

Interlining choice is a hang and a wash, not a unit price on a 100 m roll.
