Webbing is a narrow cloth with a job: carry load, finish an edge, or decorate a seam. Buyers who write “nylon tape, 25 mm” on an RFQ get whatever the mill had on the beam that week. The construction — how warp and weft interlace — decides stiffness, shine, snagging and how the strap feels on a shoulder.

Three industrial ways to make a tape
Woven (shuttle or needle loom). Warp and weft interlace. This is the volume construction for bag straps, belt loops, waist tapes and most apparel bindings. Needle looms replaced shuttle looms on narrow widths: more ends in the reed, less floor space, continuous dyeing and finishing after the weave.
Braided (spindle / maypole). Yarn packages travel in a figure-eight around a core. Even spindle counts give a tube; odd counts give a flat tape. The surface reads as a herringbone or chevron. Useful for round cords, some elastics and decorative braids — a different article from a woven strap.
Knitted (warp or weft). Chain stitches with inlaid weft, or crochet machines for thin decorative and elastic tapes. Softer, often cheaper to pattern, less stable in the length than a dense weave.
Apparel buyers mostly mean the woven article when they say webbing. Braids and knits belong on the BOM under their own names.
Plain, twill, satin
These are the same three weaves as on a broadloom, scaled to a 10–50 mm width.
Plain weave. Warp and weft interlace every end. The face and back look alike. Density is usually lower than twill at the same yarn count, so the tape is thinner, stiffer and more abrasion-resistant. Air passes. It does not drape. It is the honest construction for a work strap, a belt loop and a cheap binding. Shine is modest; patterning is limited.
Twill. Interlacing is delayed (at least every two ends), so floats appear as a diagonal. The tape is denser, thicker in the hand, and more flexible than a plain weave of the same yarns. Recovery and crease resistance improve. Tensile and abrasion are typically a step down from a tight plain weave. Bag straps and fashion belts use twill when the designer wants a softer shoulder and a visible rib.
Satin (and sateen). Interlacing is delayed further (at least every three ends). Floats dominate; the diagonal disappears. The face is glossy and “expensive.” Hand is the softest of the three. The tax is snagging and pilling: long floats catch on hook-and-loop, zippers and raw denim. Price is higher because the loom and the yarn quality have to keep those floats even.
Herringbone / broken twill is a twill whose diagonal reverses. It is a styling choice on fashion webbing and some “safety” looks; the structural story is still twill.
Other mill names you will meet — rib, piqué, pearl, jacquard — are either a denser plain/twill variant or a patterned warp (see the jacquard webbing note). They are not a substitute for writing the base weave.
Fibre and width still belong on the line
Weave sits on top of fibre. Polyester, polyamide (nylon), polypropylene, cotton, viscose rayon, acrylic and metallic yarns are all woven into tapes. Nylon is usually woven greige then dyed (cut a tape and you may see a paler core). Polypropylene is usually yarn-dyed then woven, so a cut edge stays the same colour. Nylon is typically glossier and softer; PP is lighter and cheaper. Combustion, moisture and tensile tests separate them when the mill will not.
Width is a commercial SKU, not a construction: 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 32, 38 and 50 mm are the common apparel and bag steps. Thickness (often driven by denier — 900D / 1200D / 1600D on PP programs) sets both price and toughness. A 25 mm satin in 66 dtex filament is a garment binding. A 25 mm plain weave in 1600D PP is a packing strap. They are not interchangeable.
What to put on the PO
Write fibre, weave (plain / twill / satin / herringbone), width, thickness or gsm, colour method (piece-dyed vs yarn-dyed), edge (heat-cut, woven, folded), and a breaking-strength method if the tape carries load. Decorative webbing still needs a crock and a wash; load-bearing webbing needs a tensile number, not a photo of a backpack.
A binding, a belt loop and a shoulder strap can share a colour and still be three constructions. Name the weave so the mill does not “match the swatch” with the wrong interlacing.
