Zipper sizes and gauge: #3, #5, #8 and #10

Zipper gauge (#3, #5, #8, #10) is the approximate width of the meshed chain, in millimetres, not including tape. Bigger number, thicker elements, higher lateral strength — and a bulkier line on the garment. The number on the back of a slider is the gauge that slider was tooled for. Putting a #5 slider on a #8 coil is how chains split at the corner of a packed bag.

What the number actually measures

Chinese and export houses quote gauge from closed element width (QB/T language: specification b1). Typical bands:

#4 appears on some metal flies (the old “4YG” jean zipper: #4 chain, locking slider, usually metal elements). #7 sits between apparel and luggage on some coil programmes. #2 is an invisible and ultra-light coil story.

Measure with the zipper closed, calipers on the elements only. Do not include tape. Tape width is a second number: roughly 25 mm total on many #3 nylon tapes, about 30 mm on many #5s — mill-dependent, so put it on the PO.

Slider mouth is part of gauge

A slider has a mouth height and mouth width that must sit on the chain. Indicative mill windows (always confirm the house drawing):

  • #3 coil: mouth height about 2.05–2.15 mm, mouth width about 4.2–4.25 mm; closed chain about 4.15 mm.
  • #5 coil: mouth height about 2.9–3.0 mm, mouth width about 6.5–6.6 mm.
  • #3 moulded plastic: mouth taller than coil of the same gauge, because POM teeth are blockier.
  • #5 metal: mouth height about 2.7–2.8 mm; closed chain about 5.9 mm.

Moulded #8 and #10 open-end zippers also change end-tape length and element count at the pin. Process sheets that copy a #5 open-end setup onto an #8 chain will crush the box or leave the pin short.

Strength follows gauge — and material

Lateral (crosswise) strength and burst resistance rise with gauge, but #5 metal, #5 coil and #5 moulded plastic are not interchangeable on a strength table. Metal wins abrasion and a jeans wash; coil wins flex and weight; moulded POM wins cold-weather stiffness and a chunky visual. For a backpack much over 28–30 litres, mills routinely move the main opening to #8 and a double slider so corner tension is shared.

Length is a textile measurement. Tape stretches. Put a tolerance on cut length, and do a shrinkage test on the bulk tape against the shell. A knit or corduroy that shrinks more than the zipper will arch the chain after wash.

Buying rules that survive the line

State the end use (ski shell, enzyme-washed denim, PVC-coated bag) because chemistry and wash change which tape dye and which slider lock you need. State restricted substances (azo-free tape, nickel release on metal, needle detect). For children’s garments, prefer moulded plastic stops and specify no sharp edges on metal parts.

Read the stamp on the slider, measure the closed chain, and name both on the spec. Gauge is not a style code.
