Functional finishes sell well on a line sheet. They fail in two places: the test method is missing, or the claim is larger than the chemistry. Buttons, tapes and heat-transfers pick up antimicrobial, antistatic, UV, FR and “graphene” stories from textile finishing. Treat them as claims that need a report, not as colours.

Antimicrobial
Silver, copper, some graphene-oxide finishes and commercial biocides appear on yarns, coatings and, less often, on trim surfaces. Mechanisms in the literature include membrane damage and oxidative stress — that is research language, not a hangtag. Apparel practice: name the organism set, the method (ISO 20743 is the textile antibacterial-activity method buyers meet), and wash cycles remaining. Infant and skin-contact articles still need the chemistry to pass OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 / REACH. A finish that is tough on bacteria can be a restricted-substance problem.
Do not imply medical protection. Do not extend a 10-wash lab result to “forever.”
Antistatic / conductive
Carbon, metal fibre, and graphene coatings can drop surface resistivity. Workwear (mining, electronics) cares about this; fashion usually does not. Spec surface resistivity or charge decay, not “graphene = no shock.” Blended yarns are more durable than a top coat that rubs off.
UV, FR, water-repellent
Graphene and other carbon finishes are discussed as UV absorbers (UPF talk), char-forming FR helpers, and hydrophobic coats. Each is a different test: UPF methods, flame standards for the garment, spray ratings for DWR. DWR is also a PFAS hotspot — see the print-chemistry note.
A reflective FR tape is two functions. Certify both.
How to write the spec
Article + chemistry + method + durability + RSL. Example: “polyester webbing, antibacterial finish, ISO 20743 after 20 ISO 6330 washes, STANDARD 100 Class II.” If the mill only offers a marketing PDF, it is not a function.
Graphene and graphene-oxide finishes show up in mill decks as a single magic powder: antibacterial and antistatic and UV and FR. In published textile finishing work those effects are separate recipes — coating weight, binder, reduction step, wash. Split the claim list and attach a method to each line, or drop the extras.
A “graphene button” with no resistivity number is a colour story. The same honesty applies to “cool-touch” and “negative-ion” trims: if there is no method, there is no claim. REACH and STANDARD 100 still apply to the finish chemistry even when the marketing is fashionable.
ISO 20743 reports a reduction against named organisms under lab conditions. It does not mean the trim is a biocide, a medical device, or still active after industrial laundry unless that laundry was in the test. Print the method and the wash count, or print nothing.
