On adult tailoring, a button that comes off is a nuisance. On infants’ and children’s clothing it can be a choking hazard. The tests look like toy tests because the hazard is the same: a detached object that fits in a child’s mouth.
Pull force is not one number worldwide
Labs apply a tensile load to the attached component for a set time. The load depends on the market and on the size of the part.
Widely used references:
- EN 71-1 (toy mechanical and physical properties), applied by many EU apparel programs to sewn-on components: on the order of 50 N for the smaller parts and 70 N for larger ones (the 6 mm split is the one you will see on reports).
- 16 CFR 1500.51–53 (US) uses age-banded tension, torque and, where relevant, bite and flexure. Rough working memory: about 10 lbf for the youngest infants’ components and 15 lbf for older children — confirm on the method, do not convert casually on a factory floor.
- GB 31701 (China, mandatory for infants’ and children’s textiles): attachments 3–6 mm must exceed 50 N; above 6 mm, 70 N. Parts ≤ 3 mm are discouraged on infants’ products. No accessible sharp points or edges.
Some private buying manuals still quote 90 N / 10 s on buttons above 6 mm, or a 17 lbf hold. If a brand manual is stricter than the national standard, the brand manual wins for that PO.
A button that fails is not “sew it again with more stitches” until you know whether the hole walls, the shank, or the fabric failed. Changing to a larger sew-through or a stay patch is a design change.
Small-parts cylinder
If a detached button fits entirely in the small-parts cylinder (about 31.7 mm diameter in the US toy method), it is a small part. Many fashion 12–15 mm buttons will. The correct response is attachment that does not fail, not a lecture about how pretty the pearl is.
Cords travel with this conversation
The same kidswear brief should already have EN 14682 / ASTM F1816 / GB 31701 cord rules on it. A safe button next to a forbidden hood drawstring is not a safe garment.
