Functional webbing: FR, UV, medical-grade and high-tenacity

Most apparel webbing is colour, width and a reasonable tensile. Functional webbing adds a claimed property: flame, UV, medical contact, or a load that would embarrass a fashion strap. Those claims are mill processes and lab methods. They are not a coating you mention in a meeting.

Aramid, FR-treated polyester and medical nylon are different fibres and different factories. A black 25 mm tape is not “FR” because the catalogue photo sat next to a fire icon.

Mechanics still come first

A functional tape that cannot take a load is a ribbon. Buyers still write:

  • Tensile (ISO 13934-1 is a common fabric language; some programs want a minimum breaking force in newtons on the actual width).
  • Tear (e.g. tongue tear GB/T 3917.2 / ISO 13937 families).
  • Creep under a constant load if the strap will sit tensioned (overnight set on a pack).
  • Seam or stitch holding if the failure will be at the bartack (ISO 13935-2 language).
  • Abrasion (Martindale ISO 12947) and crock (ISO 105-X12) because performance gear is still worn.

Order-of-magnitude catalogue floors (kilonewton tensiles, 10 000 fatigue cycles, 50 J impact) belong to safety harness and belt programs. Copying them onto a hoodie channel wastes money and still may be the wrong test. Match the method to the article.

Flame

FR webbing is either an inherent fibre (aramid, some modacrylics) or a treated polyester/nylon. Inherent does not wash out the same way a topical finish can. Treated tapes must name the chemistry and the wash claim.

Typical citations:

  • Vertical burn — damaged length and afterflame (ISO 6941 and related).
  • Limiting oxygen index — LOI (GB/T 5454). Values around 28% and above are often used as an “FR fibre” conversation starter; they are not a garment certification by themselves.
  • Smoke density where transport or interiors care (ASTM E662).
  • UL 94, NFPA 701 and similar when the customer’s lawyer already named them.

Melt-drip is the apparel hazard on polyester and nylon. Aramid chars. Do not assume a “FR nylon” is a non-melting nylon.

UV and weather

Outdoor tapes die from light and from heat cycling, not from a single tensile on day one.

  • UPF on the tape (AS/NZS 4399 is one language) if the claim is sun protection of the wearer — rare on a strap, common on a covering tape.
  • Artificial weathering (ISO 4892-2 xenon) with a retained strength (programs often want ≥80% after a stated exposure).
  • Temperature cycling if the tape lives in a car boot or on a mountain (e.g. −40 °C to +85 °C with no cracking).

Polyester generally weathers more honestly than unstabilised nylon. Nylon still wins abrasion. Specify the UV package; do not infer it from fibre.

High tenacity and “safety”

Nylon 6/66 high-tenacity, polyester HT, and aramid are the usual suspects. Applications split:

  • Outdoor packs and garment straps: abrasion, UV, cold flex.
  • Restraint and climbing-adjacent: dynamic load, stitch strength, a standard that is not a fashion PO.
  • Automotive belts: a regulated article. Do not treat a garment mill as a belt mill.

Fatigue and impact tests exist. Use them when the failure mode is cyclic or a fall. A static tensile is not a dynamic rating.

Medical-grade

Brace straps, tourniquet tapes and some wearable mounts pick up ISO 10993 biocompatibility (skin irritation at minimum), a cytotoxicity conversation, and sometimes sterility or a low-sensitisation claim. “Soft nylon” is not a medical claim. Disinfectant wipe resistance (alcohol, iodophors) is a use condition, not a logo.

pH (GB/T 7573), restricted substances, and a phthalate cap belong on skin-contact tapes the same way they belong on other trims.

Spec line

Write fibre, width, the function (FR / UV / medical / HT), the method and the limit, and the wash or sterilisation the claim must survive. Add the ordinary tensile and crock so the tape still behaves as webbing. If the program is a seat belt or a fall-arrest harness, you need that industry’s mill — and you still need the method on the PO, not an icon on a swatch card.
