The shell is the skin. Interlining is the skeleton. Fusing is not “sticking two cloths.” It is choosing how a front, a collar, a facing will stand, flex and look after a press and after a wash. Dots on a light wool, a PE that turns a placket into plywood, a PA that loves dry-clean but hates a 40 °C spin — those are shape decisions.

Three results that are not “peel”
Face. Light shirts, pale wools, fine facings: the wrong dot telegraphs, glazes, or casts a shadow. You see it more on a hanging garment than on a 10 cm swatch. Finish will not fully erase it.
Hand. A swatch card that feels soft can fuse into a board. Melted adhesive plus shell can lock a placket or a pocket mouth. On womenswear and shirts, hand is often the real QC, not the newton.
After wash / steam. Flat at the press is not flat after laundry. Edges lift, fronts bubble, hems ripple. That is the bond relaxing or shrinking against the shell — a coating and shrinkage problem, not a sewing problem.
If those three pass, the coating did its job. If peel is high but the face is ugly, you still failed.
Polymer is silhouette
- PA (copolyamide). Soft, springy, dry-clean durable. Jacket and coat default when the care label is dry-clean. Wrong PA on a polyester shirt program: wash peel drops.
- PES (copolyester). Wash-durable, friendly to polyester shells and imitation-silk polyesters. Fashion and washable tailoring.
- PE / HDPE. Crisp, wash-hardy. Collars, cuffs, anything allowed to be a board. Not a draped front.
Wrong polymer cannot be ironed into the right hand.
Dot density and coat weight sit next to polymer. Heavy shells: fewer, larger dots, enough melt to wet a thick cloth. Light shells: more, finer dots, low gsm base, so the face does not read as a grid. “Soft and standing” on a thin base is a double-dot skill (see coating note), not a heavier scatter.
Press feeling is not process control
The fusing note covers windows. Here the shape reminder: a sample press is not a continuous fuser. Operators change. Coated rain shells act as release paper — the melt cannot key. Elastane shells shrink on heat; the interlining may not; cooling then bubbles. Those bubbles are strain, not dirt.
Fusible tailoring versus canvas
Industrial jackets fuse fronts, lapels, collars, cuffs, pockets. They ship. They can look a little dead. Adhesive can age; bubbling is the classic complaint.
Compared with canvas:
- Fusible — fast, flatter, more rigid, bubble risk.
- Half-canvas — chest spring with a fused lower front; still a fuse below.
- Full canvas — hang, air, labour.
None of that makes fusibles “out of court.” It makes them a specified industrial tool. Choose PA, a double-dot, a sane window, and a wash/dry-clean remaining peel if the jacket is a fusible jacket. Do not sell a PE collar canvas as a Milanese front.
The check
- Face clean — no grid, no glaze, no shadow.
- Hand right for the zone (collar may be crisp; front should not).
- Still flat after the care you wrote on the label.
Those three are the shape spec. Peel is how you prove the skeleton will still be there next season.
