RFID and smart labels on apparel

A paper hangtag tells a size and a price. A smart label adds a radio or a code so the same garment can be counted in a tunnel, authenticated at the phone, or followed through industrial laundry. The mistake is to order “RFID” as if it were a print colour.

Three technologies, three jobs

UHF RFID (typically 860–960 MHz, EPC Gen2 / ISO/IEC 18000-63) is the inventory radio. A reader can see many tags without line of sight, at a few metres in a well-tuned portal. Source tagging at the factory means the carton already has identities. Chip families buyers meet include NXP UCODE and Impinj M-series parts. This is what large apparel groups use for receiving, cycle count and omnichannel pick.

NFC (HF 13.56 MHz, ISO/IEC 14443, chips such as NTAG) is the phone tap: a few centimetres, one tag at a time. Brands use it for authenticity, aftercare, and — increasingly — a link toward a digital product passport. Dual inlays (UHF plus NFC) exist when the same ticket must serve DC and consumer.

QR is ink. It is cheap, camera-based, and useless in a bulk RFID tunnel. Trade quotes often put a QR hybrid in the cents and a UHF ticket higher; treat those as order-of-magnitude, not a TrimGem price list.

Hangtag versus laundry tag

Do not confuse the constructions:

  • RFID/NFC hangtag — paper or synthetic ticket, string or pin, pulled at the till. Lowest cost, not meant to be washed.
  • Sew-in or heat-seal textile tag — lives in the garment. Silicone-encapsulated laundry RFID is specified for dozens of industrial wash cycles (hospital, hotel, workwear).
  • Woven or printed brand label with a hidden inlay — aesthetic, still a radio; metalised yarn and foil prints can detune the antenna.

A swing ticket that dies at POS does not replace a care-label chip that must survive 50 industrial washes.

What to ask the converter

Frequency and protocol. Chip memory (EPC, TID, user). Encoding (SKU versus unique serial). Attachment (string, pin, sew, heat-seal). Whether the inlay is compatible with the printer and the brand’s WMS. Whether EAS anti-theft is combined on the same ticket.

Pilot a slice of SKUs before a full roll-out. Inventory accuracy stories in the trade press (Zara, Decathlon and others) are real as programmes, not as a promise that any 500-piece RFID order will cut shrinkage by a published percentage.

QR remains the right first step when the only job is a product page or a care PDF. RFID without readers, encoding rules and a place in the WMS is a bag of chips. Combined RFID-EAS tickets make sense once the store already has gates that can see UHF; they do not replace a well-placed hangtag hole.
