Testing buttons in the lab

A button can look perfect in a polybag and fail on the first wash, the first yank, or the first nickel report. Laboratory testing is not one protocol. It is a short list matched to substrate, attachment and wearer age. Copy-pasting a toy-standard number onto a urea shirt button is how reports become theatre.

Mechanical: will it stay on?

Pull-off and attachment strength belong on the sewn or riveted garment, not on a loose disc. Chinese methods buyers meet include FZ/T 80002 and GB/T 32599. Kidswear tightens this under GB 31701 (force by part size). US and EU programmes add small-parts (16 CFR 1501) and sharpness (GB/T 31702 or the brand’s equivalent).

Impact and shear matter on plastic and resin (trade cites ASTM D5171 for button impact). Metal tack buttons need a rivet-set check: cap not pierced, tack not spinning, fabric not cut.

Snap operating force is a different test from sew-on pull-off. Do not file them as one line.

Colour, wash and abrasion

Colour fastness is textile language applied to the face: GB/T 3920 / related ISO 105 rubbing; wash methods such as ISO 6330 or GB/T 3921 on the assembled piece; light (ISO 105-B02) if the button sits on a window-display shirt. Resin that bleeds onto a white poplin is a dye problem. A plate that rubs grey onto a cuff is a finish problem.

Abrasion and polish wear are mill controls. Salt spray (ISO 9227 family) is for metal parts, not for urea.

Chemistry

  • Nickel release (EN 1811) on skin-contact metal — a release limit, not a nickel % in the alloy.
  • Lead and phthalates on painted and plasticised kids’ parts (CPSIA; REACH phthalate entries).
  • Formaldehyde on textile-covered or glued buttons (GB 18401 / brand RSL).
  • OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 as a private screen by product class (Class I infant is the strictest).

Heavy-metal migration methods from toy law (EN 71-3) appear on some kids’ programmes; they are not a substitute for apparel RSLs.

How not to write the test plan

ISO stitch-type numbers, fabric Martindale methods and zipper cyclic tests are not button methods. If a lab list reads like a copy of every standard the mill has ever heard of, reject it.

Practical mill QC: appearance 100%, attachment on a defined AQL, chemistry on the material family when the dye, plate or polymer lot changes.

A urea colour lot and a plated zinc lot never share a certificate. Kids versus adult changes lead and small-parts. Repeat the mechanical test on the bulk fabric — a snap that holds on twill can pull through jersey.

Keep reports with lot numbers. If the plater or the resin batch changes, it is a new article.
