A hook-and-bar (trouser hook, pant hook, 裤钩) is the small metal clasp inside a waistband. It takes the strain that a fashion button should not. Tailored trousers, many chinos and some skirts still close this way because a sew-on on a waistband opening works loose; a hooked bar does not.

Anatomy
Two-claw, three-claw and four-claw hooks are stamped parts: face, claws, back plate, set through the waistband. Hook-and-eye sets (two-part and three-part assemblies, sometimes with an eyelet) are the other family — a hook, a bar or eye, sometimes a painted 15 mm face on the public side.
Materials: brass (Chinese mill grades such as 62 / 65 / 68 copper, plus “eco brass” programmes), stainless, stainless-iron, and plain steel. Stainless can ship polished without a decorative plate. Steel and iron need plate and lacquer or they rust into the lining.
Adjustable waist hooks and inside-extenders are a related SKU for uniforms, pleated skirts and some children’s trousers — still a hook-and-bar problem, plus a slider.
How mills number them
Many Chinese factories use a four-digit face code. A common scheme: first digit a house prefix; second digit claw count (2 / 3 / 4); third digit metal thickness in tenths of a millimetre (4 = 0.4 mm, and so on); fourth digit the head shape (square with legend, flat, curved). Example talk: 8251 as a two-claw, 0.5 mm, square-head. Always confirm the mill’s own table — the prefix is not a national standard.
Why tailoring still uses them
A button on a waist can chew the hole and fall off. A hook-and-bar spreads load into the waistband canvas. It is faster to set with the right press than to sew a 24-ligne urea to a failing spec. It is also a sharp-point and pull-off article on kidswear: claws must be fully rolled, no accessible points, attachment force per GB 31701 / brand method.
Finish: nickel, antique, painted. Skin-contact metal still wants EN 1811 thinking if the hook can touch skin; most sit inside, but sweat migration onto a pale lining is a plate problem.
Dongguan and other Pearl River mills run this as a named product (copper or stainless faces, painted 13–15 mm public plates, invisible inside hooks). Adjustable side-tab hooks for uniforms are the same family plus a slider: still claw set, still rust if the steel is cheap. Do not substitute a fashion sew-on “for the look” on a waist that will be sat on all day.
Installation is a waistband method: mark the inside, set claws through the stack, confirm the bar meets the hook without twisting the facing. A foam block under the waist is a factory trick for location holes — useful, not a test method. Pull-off and sharpness still belong on the sewn waist.
