Wash and stretch of heat transfers

Wash and stretch of heat transfers

A transfer that looks sharp on day one can grey, crack or peel on wash five. Quality here is adhesion plus colour plus the ability to move with the cloth. Fashion mills sell “high-stretch washable transfers” for lycra and modal. Those claims are testable. They are not a logo on the carton.

TrimGem University puts wash and stretch next to print constructions because a one-stop Guangzhou accessories desk samples the bonded garment, not only the film. The catalogue will keep adding stretch grades; the lab methods do not change.

Colour and wash testing
Rub, wash and stretch on the bonded garment. A film’s datasheet without the bulk fabric is a brochure.

What labs actually run

Trade lab menus for transfers mix coating and textile methods. The useful buyer set:

  • Adhesion / peel — the bond to the fabric (ASTM peel and related coating-adhesion methods appear on lab quotes). If the edge lifts, nothing else matters.
  • Rubbing colour fastness — dry and wet, GB/T 3920 / ISO 105-X12 family, typically aiming at grade 4 on apparel programmes.
  • WashISO 6330 or GB/T 3921 on the assembled piece; count the cycles you sell (20 home washes at 40 °C is a common apparel ask, not a law).
  • Abrasion — Martindale-type (ISO 12947 / GB/T 21196) if the print sits on a bag or a work knee.
  • Light / UVISO 105-B02 or xenon/QUV if the garment is outdoor.
  • Heat of application — the press must not scorch; that is process control, not a wear test.

Stretch programmes add elongation without crack and recovery. Chinese mill talk cites very high warp/weft stretch (hundreds of percent) and high recovery on specialist films — treat the exact percentages as mill grades, then pull the sample on the bulk elastane. A transfer that survives 300% on a test strip can still crack on a 4-way mesh if the adhesive was specified for cotton.

Failure modes

Cracking on the elbow and waist — adhesive too stiff. Halo or dye migration on polyester — sublimation bleed, needs a blocker. Edge peel — press time, temperature, or a fabric finish (silicone, DWR) that the glue never wet. Grey rub — pigment not bound.

Match press recipe to the lab: the sample that passed was pressed at a named °C / s / pressure. Changing the factory press without a re-test is a new product.

Breathability complaints on large chest prints are real: a glue film is a patch. If the brief is a full-front photo on summer jersey, DTG or a high-stretch, thinner adhesive is the conversation — not a longer wash cycle on a heavy offset.

Colour ΔE on the transfer should be agreed against a printed strike-off, not against a phone photo. Lab talk of tight ΔE on instruments is for the print shop’s process control; the brand still needs a visual under D65.

TrimGem’s transfer QC is a bonded swatch on the bulk, washed and stretched as the garment will be. Artwork approval is not that test.
