Apparel hardware in China is a cluster business. The same zinc ingot becomes a fashion sew-on in Wenzhou, a jeans tack in Guangdong, or a bag lobster in a small-lot Yiwu stall. Choosing the cluster is part of the spec.
Qiaotou / Yongjia (Wenzhou)
Qiaotou is the historic button town — the 1983 rural button market is the origin story official media still tell. Official local figures in 2025-era reporting put Yongjia’s scale-above garment-accessory industry in the low billions of RMB with a few hundred button firms and huge unit output from the town. Treat the exact grain counts in newspapers as journalism; treat the cluster as real: resin and metal buttons, snaps, eyelets, zipper pulls, plating and trading stacked together.
The practical advantage is speed of kit. Resin, plates, cartons and a plater can be on the same afternoon’s motorbike run. 3D-printed tooling has shortened sample moulds that used to take a week. Vision inspection is appearing on high-speed lines. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 and GRS tickets exist in the better export sheds — they are still mill-specific.
Export from this cluster is old: Canton Fair booths, Southeast Asian and Latin American repeat orders, kids’ colour stories. It is a volume-and-mix geography.
Guangdong versus Yiwu versus the rest
Dongguan, Foshan, Guangzhou — denim tack buttons, heavier bag metal, export sewing next door, easier for a fashion buyer to walk a sample. If the garment factory is already in the Pearl River Delta, hardware here shortens the argument about who owns the die.
Yiwu — mixed small lots, eyelets, cord locks, opportunistic colour. Fast for a catalogue; weaker as a named mill for a nickel programme unless you qualify the actual factory.
Qingdao and other zipper/metal pockets exist; they are not Qiaotou.
Ningbo-scale listed groups are a different buying motion: capacity and systems, less “walk the street and pick a finish.”
How to place the order
- Cost-sensitive, many colours, short recuts → Qiaotou / Yiwu ecosystem, with a named plater.
- Denim wash, thick stacks, bag zinc → Guangdong, dies travelling with the sewing mill.
- Brand audit, wastewater, lab → pick the mill that has the room, not the cluster slogan.
IP is a cluster risk: appearance patents move fast in button towns. Do not send a branded logo to a trading stall and hope.
Wastewater and plating effluent are why some sheds will not pass a brand audit even when the button is cheap and pretty. Ask for the lab and the discharge story on plated programmes, not after the first failed salt spray.
