Zipper defects and complaints: burst chain, jammed slider, lost stops

Most zipper complaints are not mysterious. The chain bursts under side pull, the slider jams or jumps teeth, a stop walks off, the puller snaps, or the tape stains the shell. Each failure has a mill cause, a sewing cause and a laundry cause. A return that only says “zipper broken” sends the wrong CAPA to the wrong factory.

Burst chain and missing teeth

Lateral burst (chain opens in a wave, elements still on the tape) is usually gauge too small for the load, slider cavity worn open, or a sewing line so close that the slider was forced and spread. Teeth off the tape is clamp or mould pressure, or a tape bead that was never built for that element. Broken elements are alloy too soft, POM too brittle after heat, or a coil filler cord cut by a needle.

Coil that was ironed, and moulded teeth that sat under a press, fail as deformed chain that looks like “bad meshing.” Metal that saw peroxide or sulphur (rubber bands) looks like corrosion when it is chemistry.

Jammed or harsh running

Foreign thread in the mouth, a stitch through the coil, a crossed seam without slider clearance, or a bent slider after a foot collision: these are sewing. Burrs on metal teeth, dry coil, and a cavity that was always tight: these are mill. Wax or a zipper-specific silicone is a legitimate recovery; sticky oil that holds lint is not.

Auto-lock sliders that “die” after a wash were often washed open. The lock pin beats itself on an empty cavity. Jean programmes want a wash-robust spring slider and a closed chain in the laundry.

Stops, pin and box, puller

Top or bottom stop off is under-crimped hardware or a slider slammed into a stop that was never strong enough for the gauge (see the QB/T stop rows). Box walks when the reinforcement film is sewn too close or the set pressure was copied from a lighter gauge. Open-end zippers that are pulled before the pin is fully home destroy the box — that is a use and a hangtag problem, not a secret mill defect.

Puller off is a rivet or stem underspecified for a backpack yank, or a kids’ tab that should have been a closed loop. Twist-off is the same joint in torsion.

Tape: shrink, stain, fade

Polyester tape that was never shrink-tested arches the chain after a hot wash (mills often quote ~3% — measure yours). Metal teeth under steam leave blue copper stains; moulded teeth under a hot iron mushroom and trap the slider. Deep-dye tape on a light shell crocks; coated PVC/PE shells pull colour from weakly bound disperse dyes. Polyethylene bags stored too long yellow light tape.

Straightness (C-bend) has numeric limits in QB/T by length. A banana zipper is a mill viscose or a packing fold, not a fashion curve.

Ask for the defect code, the gauge, chain type, and whether the garment was washed or pressed. Then run the matching lab row — lateral, stop, lock, cycling, fastness — instead of replacing “the zipper” with a longer one.
